The breast augmentation procedure is the most commonly performed procedure in plastic surgery. Using breast implants, patients can enhance the shape and size of the breasts to enhance their figure and their confidence. At Gallaher Plastic Surgery & Spa MD, we offer this popular procedure in Powell and Knoxville, TN.
What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that uses breast implants to enlarge the breasts and improve their shape and symmetry. Patients often choose to pursue a breast augmentation procedure in order to enhance their figure and increase their confidence. Often times, a breast augmentation can help patients achieve a figure that is more proportional or otherwise more desirable. Breast augmentation techniques can also be used to correct asymmetry in the breasts. This treatment may also be incorporated into a mommy makeover or breast reconstruction.

What Kinds of Breast Implants Are Available?
At Gallaher Plastic Surgery & Spa MD, we use Mentor and Allergan breast implants. These implants are available in a variety of sizes and profiles, and are filled with either silicone gel or saline, a sterile salt water solution.
- Silicone implants often produce a more natural look and feel, although they require a slightly larger incision during surgery.
- Saline implants are inserted into the body without fluid and then filled during surgery. This allows them to be inserted using smaller incisions, which can reduce scarring and recovery time.
Our surgeons will guide you in determining the size of your implant and having realistic expectations. To help you visualize your new breast size, you may look at before and after photos or try on a bra with the implants. It’s important to realize that your final result will be influenced by two main factors:
- The size and profile of the implant you choose
- The amount of existing breast tissue you have prior to enlargement.
What is Breast Implant Removal?
In some cases, breast implant removal becomes necessary. Most often, breast implant removal is performed when a patient decides that they don't like their results and no longer wish to have breast implants. In rare cases, breast implant removal may be required in the event of complications with the implants. If they rupture, they will need to be removed from the breasts. In any case, we are typically able to use the same incisions from the original procedure to remove the implants, minimizing additional scarring.
What is Breast Implant Revision?
A breast implant revision is performed if a patient needs to replace their current breast implants. This is performed most often when a patient is unhappy with the results they have achieved from their initial breast augmentation. We are able to replace the implants with implants of another size or material to produce the desired results. In rare cases, breast implant revision is performed when there is a complication with the current implants. If they rupture or other issues develop, they can be removed and replaced with new implants. In any case, we are typically able to use the same incisions from the original procedure to adjust or replace the implants, minimizing additional scarring.
What is the Breast Augmentation Surgery Like?
During your breast augmentation surgery, we will make an incision in the breasts in one of the following locations:
- Armpit
- Around the areola of the nipple
- Underneath the breast, along its natural fold
The location and size of your incision will depend on the type of implant being used and your specific treatment plan. After the incision is made, we will form a pocket to hold the implant. When in its proper position, the incision will be closed with stitches and possibly taped. To achieve the best results and to make your recovery as quick as possible, we will discuss with you specific surgical techniques that are best suited for your needs.
What is Recovery Like Following a Breast Augmentation?
Recovery following a breast augmentation is different for every patient. In general, you will probably feel a little sore and tired for several days following your surgery. The first 24 to 72 hours after your procedure is when you will experience the most discomfort. However, your breasts may remain swollen and tender for a month or longer. You should avoid strenuous activities for at least one month, but it is likely that you may be allowed to resume light activities after about one week and return to work within a few days. Part of your recovery also involves wearing a postoperative bra or compression garment. These items are designed to provide you with extra support and positioning while you heal. We will provide you with additional information regarding your recovery during your consultation.
